Hello. This is Akio.
Recently, we can see hammers all year round in Mikomoto, but the best season is summer.
Every ocean has a season and there is a best time.
It would not be an exaggeration to say that this is the ultimate season.
The season lasts only one month. Shiretoko is a World Heritage site in the North Sea!
The limit of diving in Shiretoko! I have challenged drift ice diving.
Isn’t it cold?
Of course it is cold, the average temperature in Shiretoko in February is -6.5 degrees Celsius.
The water temperature is -1 to -2 degrees Celsius.
How could it not be cold?
However, there are many things happening in Shiretoko that make you forget about the cold.
Delicious meals!
Encounters with cute foxes, deer, Steller’s sea eagles, and other animals.
The scenery of the rich nature.
And seasonal drift ice.
And the excitement of diving under the ice floes that only a limited number of divers can experience.
There are many attractions of ice floe diving that will make you forget about the cold, but the best thing about it is the huge mass of ice seen from the water.
The view from the water is nothing short of spectacular.
The halocline that forms at the boundary between fresh water and sea water is another attraction.
Animals and plants survive in this extreme environment.
Needless to say, the spectacular scene was spectacular, but there were also many strange sights spread out under that ultimate environment.
These include the mysterious phenomenon of kelp tips freezing in the water and cavities in floating ice floes near the water’s surface.
It is certainly cold, but not too cold if you dive with the proper equipment, including a dry suit.
Of course, the temperature also has a big influence, and if the weather is bad and it is cold, it is hard to get warm.
Well, the day I dived was the hottest day ever recorded in February in Shiretoko.
I guess I am not that persuasive.
